Free toolbox talk template (UK)
Shaun Holmes
I've spent over 20 years in UK construction, and a briefing that is not written down is a briefing nobody can show later. This is a blank record: the topic, the date, the site, who presented it, the key points, and a place for names and signatures.
This talk supplements the site's own risk assessment and method. It does not replace them, and it is not a substitute for competent health and safety advice.
How to run a toolbox talk
Pick one topic for the job in front of you. If you want a year of them already grouped by season, use the 52-week planner. If the topic is already written up, open that talk from the library and read it out. This blank sheet is for a topic you are covering from your own method.
Keep it to about five minutes, before the work starts, with the people who are actually doing the job. Say what the hazard is on this site today, what you are doing about it, and what they should stop and ask about. Write the key points in the box while they are fresh. Then ask if anyone has seen something on this job that the points missed. Let them answer. A talk with no gap for a question is a notice, not a briefing.
Pass the sheet round. Name, signature, and the presenter signs it at the end. Keep it with the job records. Signing means the person was there and had the chance to ask. It does not replace the risk assessment or the method, and it does not train anyone for work they are not competent to do. If the method on the sheet and the method on the tools are different, stop and sort the method. Do not tidy the sheet to match what you wish you had said.
Blank record
Print this sheet, or use your browser's print dialog to save a PDF. It is one A4 page on its own when you print the template. The how-to prints with it when you print the whole page. Pop your email in the first time. After that, the buttons print straight away.
