VAT threshold checker

I add the last 12 months before I treat a year as still outside VAT. The line is HMRC's. This page only adds up what you type.

This is the rolling 12-month test. Register for VAT (opens in a new tab) says you must register if your total taxable turnover for the last 12 months goes over £90,000. You have to register within 30 days of the end of the month you went over. The effective date of registration is the first day of the second month after that. Checked October 2026. I read the page on 18 October 2026. This is an estimate, not tax advice, and it does not register you. The figures stay in the browser.

How do you want to enter the turnover?

The 12 months end with this one. Today's page starts on October 2026.

Taxable turnover in each month

Not profit. Costs do not come off this test. Enter 0 for a month with nothing to count.

The figures it uses

Checked October 2026. All of these were read from GOV.UK on 18 October 2026. If a page has moved on since then, the page wins.

  • The threshold

£90,000. You must register if the last 12 months go over that, or if you expect the next 30 days alone to go over it. You can choose to register below it. Register for VAT (opens in a new tab) and how VAT works (opens in a new tab), which says businesses have to register if taxable turnover is more than £90,000.

  • The 30-day rule

If the rolling total goes over, you have to register within 30 days of the end of that month. The effective date is the first day of the second month after you go over. HMRC's example: over on 15 July, register by 30 August, effective date 1 September. This calculator uses that same count of days.

  • What counts as turnover

Taxable turnover is the value of everything you sell that is not VAT exempt or out of scope. The register page includes zero-rated, reduced-rated and standard-rated goods, and goods and services which are subject to the domestic reverse charge. It is not profit.

The domestic reverse charge

On many construction jobs between two VAT-registered businesses, the customer accounts for the VAT instead of paying it to you. That is the domestic reverse charge. It does not change the £90,000 line, and the register page says those supplies still count in taxable turnover. Who the invoice is aimed at, and the note the invoice has to carry, is in the reverse charge guide. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is a different test, in the Making Tax Digital guide. Common questions

What is the VAT registration threshold?

£90,000 of taxable turnover. GOV.UK says you must register if the total for the last 12 months goes over £90,000, or if you expect it to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days. Checked October 2026, from the register for VAT page, read on 18 October 2026.

When do I have to register if the rolling total goes over?

Within 30 days of the end of the month you went over. The effective date of registration is the first day of the second month after that. HMRC's example: if the total goes over on 15 July, you must register by 30 August, and the effective date is 1 September.

Does exactly £90,000 mean I have gone over?

No. The register for VAT page says you must register when the total goes over £90,000, and the how VAT works page says more than £90,000. A total of £90,000 is level with the line.

What does taxable turnover include?

The value of what you sell that is not VAT exempt or out of scope. GOV.UK says that includes zero-rated, reduced-rated and standard-rated sales, and goods and services which are subject to the domestic reverse charge. It is not profit. Costs do not come off it.

Does this page register me for VAT?

No. It adds up the figures you type and applies the rolling 12-month test. It does not run the separate test for a single job you expect to push you over in the next 30 days. Registration is done with HMRC.
