How many tiles?

I count the tiles from the area and the size on the box, then add the wastage I am willing to carry.

This page turns an area into tiles, and into boxes once you type how many are in the box. Adhesive is from the BAL SPF S1 sheet. Grout is included only when your tile matches a row on the BAL Grout sheet. The figures stay in the browser.

Area

Type the square metres, or the length and the height. If both sides are filled in, they are used and the area box is ignored.

Square metres, if you are not using the two sides.

Blank means none.

Tile

Millimetres, from the box.

Millimetres, from the box.

The gap between tiles. 3 mm is a starting figure.

Extra tiles for cuts. 10% is a starting figure. Adhesive and grout do not get this extra.

Printed on the box. Leave blank if you only want a tile count.

Only needed for a grout figure, and only when the tile matches a row on the BAL sheet.

Your estimate

Enter the area and the tile size. The tile count appears here. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How the tiles are worked out

The area is the length times the height, or the square metres you type, minus openings. Each tile takes its own size plus the joint. The wastage you type is added, and the count is rounded up. Boxes are that count divided by the tiles per box you type, rounded up. There is no assumed pack size.

Adhesive is BAL SPF S1 (opens in a new tab), a 20 kg bag, data sheet issued May 2025. Dry wall is 0.6 m² per kilogram with a 4 mm notched trowel, or 0.5 m² per kilogram with a 6 mm notch. A wet wall, solid bed, 6 mm notch, is 0.4 m² per kilogram. Floors and outside, 10 mm notch, solid bed, is 0.26 m² per kilogram. The sheet says coverage may vary with the surface and the trowel.

BAL Grout (opens in a new tab), also issued May 2025, prints four coverage rows: 200 × 100 × 6 mm at a 3 mm joint is 2.65 m² per kilogram, 400 × 300 × 8 mm at 3 mm is 4.97, 600 × 200 × 8 mm at 2 mm is 6.49, and 900 × 600 × 10 mm at 2 mm is 12.37. Pack sizes on that sheet are 20 kg, 10 kg, 3.5 kg and 1.5 kg. If your tile is not one of those rows, this page does not invent a grout weight. Read on 18 October 2026. Wastage is for the tiles, not for the adhesive or the grout. Other free tools are on the tools page.

Common questions

Does the joint change the tile count?

Yes. Each tile is counted with the joint added to its width and height, then the wastage you typed is added, and the result is rounded up. The tiles per box is the number you type from the box. This page does not assume a pack size.

Where does the adhesive figure come from?

The BAL SPF S1 data sheet, issued May 2025, read on 18 October 2026. A 20 kg bag. Dry wall is 0.6 square metres per kilogram with a 4 mm notched trowel, or 0.5 with a 6 mm notch. A wet wall solid bed with a 6 mm notch is 0.4. Floors and outside, 10 mm notch, solid bed, is 0.26. The sheet says coverage may vary with the surface and the trowel.

Why is there sometimes no grout figure?

BAL Grout prints four coverage rows, not a figure for every tile. This page uses a row only when your tile size, thickness and joint match it. Any other tile gets a tile count and, if you typed it, a box count. It does not invent a grout weight.

Does wastage apply to the adhesive?

No. The wastage is extra tiles for cuts. Adhesive and grout are worked from the area you are tiling. You may still have some left in the bucket. The sheet already says coverage can vary.
